Festival EventA festival is an event usually and ordinarily staged by a local community which centers on some unique aspect of that community.Among many religions a feast or festival event is a set of celebrations in honour of God or gods. A feast and a festival event is historically interchangeable. However, the term "feast" has also entered common secular parlance as a synonym for any large or elaborate meal. When used as in the meaning of a festival event , most often refers to a religious festival rather than a film event or art event festival. In the Christian liturgical calendar there are two principal feasts, properly known as the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord ( Christmas event ) and the Feast of the Resurrection, ( Easter event ). In the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican liturgical calendars there are a great number of lesser feasts throughout the year commemorating saints, a sacred event , doctrines etc. Etymology of Festival The word fest derives from the Middle English, from Middle French word festivus, from the Latin word festivus. Festival was first recorded as a noun in 1589. Before it had been used as an adjective from the fourteenth century, meaning to celebrate a church holiday event . The etymology of feast is very similar to that of festival. The word "feste" comes from Middle English, from Middle French, from the Latin word festa. Feast first came into usage as a noun circa 1200, and feast was used as a verb circa 1300. A festival event is a special occasion of feasting or celebration, that is usually religious. There can be many different types of festival event , like Halloween and Christmas. Function of a festival event A festivals event may serve to meet specific needs, as well as to provide entertainment. These times of celebration event offer a sense of belonging for religious, social, or geographical groups. A modern festival event that focuses on cultural or ethnic topics seeks to inform its members of their traditions. In past times, a festival event was a time when the elderly shared stories and transferred certain knowledge to the next generation. A historic feast event often provided a means for unity among families and for people to find mates. A select anniversary event has an annual festival event to commemorate a previous significant occurrence. Types of festival event There are numerous types of festivals in the world. Though many have religious origins, others involve seasonal change or have some cultural significance. Also certain institutions celebrate their own festival event (often called "fests") to mark some significant occasion event in their history. These occasions could be the day these institutions were founded or any other event which they decide to commemorate periodically, usually annually. A Seasonal festival event A festival event is determined by the solar and the lunar calendars and by the cycle of the seasons. The changing of the season was celebrated because of its effect on food supply. Ancient Egyptians would celebrate the event of seasonal inundation caused by the Nile River, a form of irrigation, which provided fertile land for crops. In the Alps, in autumn the return of the cattle from the mountain pastures to the stables in the valley is celebrated as Almabtrieb festival event . A recognized winter festival event , the Chinese New Year, is set by the lunar calendar and the event is celebrated from the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice. Ancient Egyptian festival event An Ancient Egyptian festival event was usually religious but others were not such as one festival event established by Ramesses III to celebrate his victory over the Libyans. When feasts occurred, they were either determined by lunar cycles or the Egyptian calendar. A festival event was a large celebration with plenty of food available. In one festival event in the 12th century BC, 11,341 loaves of bread and 385 jars of beer were given to the public. The Sed festival event celebrated the thirtieth year of a pharaohs rule and then every three (or four in one case) years after that.
Ceremonial EventA ceremonial event is an activity infused with ritual significance performed on a special occasion.Celebration events of life A ceremonial event may mark a rite of passage in a human career, commonly marking the significance of the following:
A government ceremonial event Sometimes, a ceremonial event may only be performed by a person with certain authority. For example, the event of the opening of the United Kingdom Parliament is presided over by the Sovereign. The event of the naming and launching of a warship will be under the supervision of its captain or a higher-ranked naval officer. A wedding event will be performed by a priest or a Civil Celebrant, as in Australia. The President of the United States is customarily sworn in by the Chief Justice of the United States, and the British sovereign is always crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Other event celebrations Other, society-wide ceremonies may mark an annual, seasonal or recurrent event like:
A different ceremonial event underscores the importance of irregular special occasions, such as:
In some Asian cultures, ceremonies also play an important role for example the tea ceremony.
Competitive EventA Competitive event involves rivalry between individuals, students and lecturers. They sometimes try to beat each other in games of chance, archery, etc. groups, nations, or animals, for territory or resources. A Competitive event arises whenever two or more parties strive for a goal that cannot be shared. A Competitive event occurs naturally between living organisms which coexist in the same environment. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates. In addition, humans compete for attention, wealth, prestige, and fame.A Competitive event may give incentives for self improvement. For example, if two watchmakers are competing for business, they will lower their prices and improve their products to increase sales. If birds compete for a limited water supply during a drought, the more suited birds will survive to reproduce and improve the population. In a competitive event , rivals will often refer to their competitors as "the competition". The term can also be used to refer to the competitive event or tournament itself. Sizes and levels of a competitive event A Competitive event of a varying size may also exist; sometimes a competitive event may be between two members of a species, while other types of competitive event can involve entire species. In an example in economics, a competitive event between two small stores would be considered small compared to a competitive event between several mega-giants. As a result, the consequences of the competitive event would also vary- the larger the competitive event , the larger the effect. In addition, the level of competitive event can also vary. At some levels a competitive event can be informal and be more for pride or fun. However, other types of competitive event can be extreme and bitter; for example, some human wars have erupted because of an intense competitive event between two nations or nationalities. Cooperative competitive event vs. destructive competitive event A destructive competitive event A destructive competitive event seeks to benefit an individual / group / organism by damaging / eliminating competing individuals / groups / organisms; A destructive competitive event opposes the desire for mutual survival - it is “winner takes all”. The rationale being that the challenge is a zero-sum game; the success of one group is dependent on the failure of the other competing groups. A destructive competitive event tends to promote fear, a first-strike mentality and embraces certain forms of trespass. A cooperative competitive event A cooperative competitive event is based upon promoting mutual survival - “everyone wins”. Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” is a process where individuals involve themselves in a cooperative competitive event to improve their level of happiness but also compete in a cooperative manner through peaceful exchange and without violating other people. A cooperative competitive event focuses individuals / groups / organisms against the environment. Consequences of a competitive event competitive event can have both beneficial and detrimental effects. Many evolutionary biologists view an inter-species and intra-species competitive event as the driving force of adaptation and ultimately, evolution. However, some biologists, most famously Richard Dawkins, prefer to think of evolution in terms of a competitive event between single genes, which have the welfare of the organism 'in mind' only insofar as that welfare furthers their own selfish drives for replication. Some social Darwinists claim that a competitive event also serves as a mechanism for determining the best-suited group, politically, economically and ecologically. On the negative side, competitive event can cause injury to the organisms involved, and drain valuable resources and energy. A human competitive event can be expensive, as is the case with political elections, an international sports competitive event , and advertising wars. It can lead to the compromising of ethical standards in order to gain an advantage; for example, several athletes have been caught using banned steroids in professional sports in order to boost their own chances of success or victory. And it can be harmful for the participants, such as athletes who injure themselves exceeding the physical tolerances of their bodies, or companies which pursue unprofitable paths while engaging in a competitive event rivalries.
